Driving Without Insurance – Can It Be An Option

It is always the question that almost everyone has asked themselves at least once in their lifetime. Car insurance is a legal requirement in most countries especially in USA. It is not an option but mandatory. However sometimes, it can rip you off a good fortune wherein you ask yourself if you can just get rid of it at one point or another.

Police sometimes set up traffic checkpoints to request for proof of car insurance. According to study, there is still a good number of drivers who don’t have car insurance and majority of them are young ones.  A few states allow drivers to provide alternative proof of financial responsibility, like a self-insurance policy or surety bond, but this is not very common. Also, if you are uninsured and you indicate “Intent to Drive as an uninsured motorist”, your vehicle tag can be seized and your car impounded. Young ones are most needed to have car insurance since they are at highest risk for vehicular accidents.

The penalty for driving without insurance varies from state to state, country to country. Once discovered that you don’t have car insurance, you will be charged with violation state of law. You will then be imposed fines by the law which would range from at least $150-$500; required community services, and/or driving privileges suspension for one year. Having this on your record will also keep you from getting qualified as an applicant for car insurance or getting affordable premium rates in the future; as insurance companies will run background checks on their potential customers.  Also, many lenders won’t finance a car unless the borrower provides at least minimal car insurance for their vehicle.

In case of collision, you will be responsible for medical expenses and property damages especially in the restoration of the damaged car. You will have to replace a new car with your own money in case the damaged car is totaled. You will also have to comply with the financial responsibility laws (SR16, SR22, SR22s), and face legal punishments.

You will need a very good lawyer to save you from the trouble for driving without a license especially in case of a collision. They say that charges are best reduced when defendant can prove only a short lapse in the coverage which is typically from 30-60 days. Drivers can defend themselves by informing the judge about their lack of knowledge about their lapsed or invalid car insurance. There are times when insurance companies terminate a driver’s policy without fully informing the policy holders ahead of time. Defendants could pose a good defense on this especially when the record shows that they’ve received the formal notification about the cancellation of their policy at a very later time. Judges can be lenient on first time offenders and just give them a 60-day driving suspension instead of 1 whole year.

So to be prudent, getting a car insurance is not an option, but rather mandatory. It is a requirement by law which we should abide or face the consequences. However, there is more to it than just being a requirement by law. In case of accidents, it will not only save us when we are in danger but it will also protect us when we’ve jeopardized someone else’s life inevitably.
